Press Release

The Happy Trails Children’s Foundation is proud to present for 2008, Silver Screen Legend XI. This is the eleventh year the foundation through the generosity of the famous Colt’s Manufacturing Co. LLC of Hartford, CT has used very special guns and holsters to raise money for abused children.

The guns and holsters this year are a tribute to Roy Rogers and the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show. What do Roy Rogers and the 101 Ranch Wild West Show have in common?

Legendary singing cowboy Roy Rogers was star of films, radio, records, television and personal appearances. Through the years, he appeared and performed at countless stage shows, fairs, rodeos and Wild West shows. For several years, he was headliner of the Roy Rogers Championship Rodeo, produced by Col. Jim Eskew, of the JE Ranch Rodeo. Col. Eskew presented Roy with a pair of six-guns from the collection of the World renowned 101 Ranch. These 7 ½” barreled .45 Colt Single Action Army revolvers with the 101 Ranch brand crudely stamped on the side frame were gold plated and heavily used in exhibition shooting by Roy in his live performances. To go along with the gold plated guns, Roy had a special double holster rig made in 1949 to commemorate the centennial of the 1849 gold rush. The outfit in the Roy Rogers style featured gold spots and buckle sets. The original guns and holsters are now on display in the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum in Branson, MO

This year’s Silver Screen Legend pistols, donated by the generous folks at Colt’s Manufacturing LLC, commemorate the originals. Beautifully engraved and gold plated, with 7 ½” barrels, these .45’s feature finely hand crafted, genuine stag grips and the special 101 Ranch brand engraved, not stamped as on the originals. The holster rig is an exacting replica of the original, fully carved using the identical carving pattern as on the original with hand crafted and engraved gold plated spots and buckle sets. Roy reserved the use of this very fancy outfit for public appearances and for use in photo shoots for his comic book covers and movie publicity.

The original concept, overall theme, coordination, and design of the Silver Screen Legend XI were provided by Jim Lockwood of Legends in Leather.  He also personally hand crafted all the leather in his Prescott, AZ shop.  The handmade sterling silver gold plated buckle sets, spots, and the exquisite hand engraving on the pistols were provided by Conrad Anderson, Rocktree Enterprises, Kingston, ID.  The exceptional carved ivory grips were hand crafted by Bob Leskovec, Precision Pro Grips, Gibsonia, PA.  Ben Hansen of Beauty from Scratch, Prescott Valley, AZ made the presentation case for the guns. Ron Love of Prescott, AZ donated the prop cartridges.

The Legend

Legendary singing cowboy Roy Rogers, star of radio, film, records, television, and personal appearances, was a hero to millions of fans from the Saturday matinee era throughout the television era. The name Roy Rogers personifies the values, tradition and spirit that are at the heart of our rich American Heritage. Roy’s films were based on a formula that included action, romance, comedy and music. They had something for everyone and are still enjoyable entertainment today, more than 50 years after they were originally produced. Ten years ago Jim Lockwood wrote, “When Roy left us July 6, 1998, someone very special, the very essence of what made America great, slipped away. But because of Roy, the kind of person he was, and the values he represented, America is a better place and her people far richer.” That statement is even truer today. During his long and colorful career riding his golden Palomino Trigger, with two six guns by his side, Roy represented the epitome of truth, justice and the freedom of the American spirit. This year’s SILVER SCREEN LEGEND XI reproduces one of the three very special six-gun outfits that became his own personal signature.

The Outfit

In 1949, Roy commissioned the famous Hollywood tailor “Nudie” to create a unique two-gun holster rig to commemorate the centennial of the 1849 gold rush. Fashioned in the Roy Rogers “style”, this fully carved and two toned outfit, featured special gold spots and buckle sets. SILVER SCREEN LEGEND XI is an exacting replica of this famous outfit, fully lined and hand carved using the identical carving pattern and hand crafted and engraved gold spots and buckles. Roy reserved the use of this very fancy outfit for public appearances and for use in photographs for his wonderful comic book covers and movie posters. Roy wore this outfit when he appeared in two guest spots on the popular FALL GUY TV series in the early 1980’s. This is truly a legendary outfit in the outstanding Roy Rogers tradition. The original holster rig with the gold plated 101 Ranch Wild West Show guns is on display in the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum in Branson, MO. Visit the Museum when in the Branson area. From March through December, Roy Rogers, Jr. performs with the High Riders Band in the Happy Trails Theater at the museum, a show you will not want to miss.

The Makers

The original concept, overall theme, coordination, and design of the SILVER SCREEN LEGEND X were provided by Jim Lockwood. He also personally hand crafted all of the leather.

Legends in Leather gun leather must not only look like the original when on display, it must also fit and hang like the original when worn. The level, angle and placement of the holsters are as critical as the correct number of bullet loops, color and thickness of the leather. Each outfit is individually handcrafted to reach this goal. Lockwood is a benefactor member of the NRA and a life member of the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS). He is a member of the Colt Collectors Association and World Fastdraw Association.

The Children

Legendary western entertainers Roy Rogers and Dale Evans spent a lifetime devoted to children and their support of children-at-risk is well known.  The Happy Trails Children’s Foundation is pleased to carry on the important work inspired by Roy and Dale.  The Cooper Home for abused children, a project of the Happy Trails Children’s Foundation, is currently operating at maximum capacity, providing residential care and treatment services for 44 severely abused boys between the ages of 10 and 15.  With a lengthy waiting list, we urgently need to build another cottage on our campus that will increase our capacity to 68 children.  This project is estimated to cost in excess of $500,000.  We need your help!

As a result of our association with Roy and Dale, and the values they represented, the Happy Trails Children’s Foundation is probably the only children’s organization in the country today that actively promotes shooting sports and responsible gun ownership, and is in turn financially supported by shooters, collectors, organized shooting sports and the firearms industry.

Opportunity Drawing
